Many situations allow for the issuance of a work permit in Canada. Although there are many exceptions, the rule is that no work permit will be issued to a foreigner unless no qualified candidate is available to fill the position in Canada, and the work permit will be restricted to the position for which it is issued.
We are well aware of the pressures exerted on employers due to their lack of workforce or due to a pressing need for a specialised worker. The issuance of a work permit will normally take a few weeks depending on the type of work, the level of work, the country of origin of your worker, etc. Of course, if particular circumstances are applicable, it may be possible to have the process expedited: many work permits can be obtained directly at the border!
Although work permits are usually restricted to a specific position, more permissive work permits may be obtained in particular circumstances, for example if you are a foreign student or if you are the partner of a foreign worker or student, or if you qualify under certain special programs, such as youth mobility programs.
